Steps to Becoming a Security Officer

They’re present at large special events, shopping centers, hospitals, major gathering places, banks, hospitality centers, and so forth. Many security officers have prior police or military background, but that is by no means a requirement to enter the security field. 

So You Want to Be a Security Officer but Don't Know Where to Start

Becoming a security guard only involves a few prerequisites. The general requirements include:

Firearm Permit Fact Sheet

Individuals may apply for a firearms permit if they are U.S. Citizens or a permanent legal immigration status. These individuals must also be at least 21 years of age in addition to the following:

  1. Not be banned from owning or possessing any firearm pursuant to State or Federal 
  2. Must complete a criminal history background check through the FBI and the CA Department of Justice
  3. Complete and submit the Firearms Permit initial application to the bureau
  4. Complete the required training courses (including passing all required examinations and qualifications
  5. Pay the initial application fee
  6. Pass an assessment within the six months preceding the date the application is submitted to the bureau



Firearms Assessment

Individuals applying for a firearms permit must pass an assessment for the purposes of determining whether they possess appropriate judgement, restraint, and self-control to carry a firearm while on duty. The assessment and application will be valid for a the specific caliber for which they’ve applied for. Once a firearms permit is granted, the caliber will appear on the firearm permit itself. Permitholders may not carry a firearm with a caliber that does not appear on their firearms permit. If one wishes to add calibers to their permit, they must submit another application and undergo another assessment for that specific caliber. The following are requirements to add calibers to a pre-existing permit:

> Current and valid BSIS firearms permit

> Complete at least am 8-hour course on carrying a gun and use of firearm

> Pass a BSIS written firearm exam with a minimum passing score of 85%

> Completion of range training

> Submission of a form to add the caliber


Renewing a Firearms Permit

To renew a firearms permit, the permit holder needs to complete a firearms renewal application and submit payment to the bureau at least 60 days prior to the permit’s expiration date. Within that time, the permit holder needs to complete 4 range qualifications, 2 of which needs to be completed within a 12-month period of the permit’s 2-year term with no 2 being within 4 months of each other. As always, range qualifications must be completed at a bureau-approved firearms training facility. 


The permit holder needs to complete a 2-hour review training course in the se of force and de-escalation of force. This is in line with a bureau-approved trainer ascertaining whether or not the permit holder possesses appropriate judgement and restraint. Renewal applicants needs to pass the written firearms exam again with a passing score of at least 85%. 

Baton Permit

A baton permit may only be issued by bureau-certified baton training facilities to individuals ho completes the required baton training course or those who possess a valid and current BSIS-issued security guard registration. Baton permits are not subject to renewal.

Signs of a Potential Shoplifter

Shop owners and store managers already have their hands full when running a retail establishment. The safety and security of their staff, shoppers and merchandise are always a top concern when running a smooth operation. The National Retail Federation reports that inventory shrink accounts for nearly $4.86 Billion in losses every year. Retail spaces, small and large, report that they’ve seen an increase in theft and shoplifting. Despite this, there are a number of things shop owners and store managers can do to reduce shoplifting in their stores.

Some stores train their staff to identify potential shoplifters, or at least individuals who display abnormal behavior. Loss prevention units are especially trained in watching shoppers to reduce to loss of merchandise and store profits. There is no such thing as a typical look of a shoplifter. Additionally, people of all backgrounds regardless of race, gender, age, etc. have been caught shoplifting. Here are some things you can watch out for when surveying shoppers in your establishment:

Displaying Avoidance Behaviors

It’s important to be able to recognize certain behaviors and body language of a potential thief. When a shopper is particularly being aloof and avoids making eye contact with other people, that can be a cause of concern. Look for customers who avoid other shoppers, especially staff members. Some shoplifters may even spend a considerable amount of time in an obscure part of the store where they can be left alone.

Wearing Large or Multiple Layers of Clothing

Wearing large or more clothing than is appropriate for the weather may also be a cause for concern. Large coats and jackets can conceal stolen goods and merchandise without making it appear obvious to an untrained eye. Some shoplifters will even go as far as wearing layers of stolen clothing while in fitting rooms so that they aren’t carrying it out the store. Be on the lookout for bulky jackets, coats, or hoodies that can easily hide merchandise.

Carrying Large or Multiple Bags

Although carrying shopping bags are typical of shoppers, be wary of individuals carrying rather large, seemingly empty bags. Also be on the look out for shoppers carrying backpacks, large purses or tote bags, beach bags, luggage, or duffle bags.

Pay Frequent Visits to the Store

Seasoned shoplifters will visit a location multiple times before finally returning to steal or shoplift their targeted items. Before doing so, they may appear to wander or look around for potential targets to steal. Many consider this activity as scoping or casing an area before returning, often when an accomplice, to commit theft.

Casing an area doesn’t necessarily always happen in-store either. Often times, thieves will case the outside of a building to look for vulnerabilities in security, and ideal points of break-in. Distracting Behaviors

Many shoplifters will distract store clerks to make it easier for someone else to steal. This is more often done in smaller retail spaces, and usually those without a security camera system in place. You’ve probably seen videos online of an accomplice occupying a cashier while an accomplice ventures to the opposite end of the store to shoplift. Beware of individuals who come in together then split up once inside the store.

Making a Fast Exit

Most shoplifters won’t hang around after they’ve stolen something. They’ll quickly bolt towards the exit without so much as making eye contact. Some may attempt to conceal their identity by pulling up their hood or scarf. There are videos circulating the internet of brazen thieves quickly leaving establishments while carrying piles of merchandise. However, most other shoplifters are discreet in their crimes as they life to draw as little attention to themselves as possible.

Beware of Carts and Strollers

As surprising as it may be to some, some shoplifters are caught pushing strollers and carts. Most strollers have storage compartments where moms can keep their bags and other belongings. These are easy containers for stolen merchandise as most wouldn’t assume a mother to steal. Some thieves were even caught pushing empty strollers to throw off the unsuspecting store clerk.

Recently, an incident at Disneyworld took place where a man assaulted a security personnel for enforcing their face covering policy. In Georgia, a dispute relating to a mask mandate left 1 employee dead and 2 others injured. The incident broke out after a customer and store clerk argued about a face covering.

These are only a few of many incidents that took place surrounding mask mandates across the country. Security Officers are typically trained in de-escalation tactics. Usually a verbal interaction is all that is needed. If that doesn’t work and the individual becomes physical or violent, then the guard is trained to use reasonable force and contact local law enforcement.

How to Protect Your Business During a Protest

Peaceful protests are the norm and usually never escalate to anything but. However, when tension escalate, small businesses, shoppers, and staff get caught in the cross hairs of angry protesters. What can follow is looting, property damage, and possible injuries to bystanders. Business owners want to keep their property, patrons, employees, and themselves safe and out of harm’s way. To accomplish this, they must be prepared in the event that a peaceful protest erupts into turmoil and chaos.

Stay Informed

A majority of the time, protest organizers are required to get a permit before demonstrating publicly. They also advertise those event to gain traction and increase the number of attendees. Most, if not all, use social media or the internet in general as a mans to spread awareness about the event. Some organizers spread flyers and poster to announce when and where a demonstration will take place. Keep up to date on local events to being preparing ahead of time. If you aren’t able to stay informed, you can pre-emptively prepare by gathering tools and materials ahead of time.

Reduce Building Weaknesses and Vulnerabilities

It’s important to determine what makes your storefront the most vulnerable. A few examples include:

  • Large windows
  • Glass doors
  • Absence of gates
  • Back or side doors
  • Flammable materials
  • Sprinkler or fire systems

Invest in a good alarm and camera system. Cameras will capture illegal activities as they take place. They may also serve as evidence should the store owner choose to take legal actions against looters.

Keep plywood boards on hand to cover windows of glass doors to restrict access. Better yet, install metal bars and grills as they are more secure and aren’t flammable.

Hire a Security Guard

A security guard (or officer) will have a presence that will make rioters and looters think twice before entering a property. An armed guard will add an extra layer of protection to the store and it’s inhabitants. Customers may also feel safer with a guard on duty.

Close Up Shop

If you are aware of an upcoming demonstration, and are fearful of it escalating, consider closing shop for the day. Move or store your most valuable merchandise and cash in a separate location until things die down. You can also adjust your store hours to minimize the risk of loss or injury.

Post signs on your store front that cash and other merchandise have been removed from the property.

Call the Police

If trespassers won’t leave the property, call the police. A police officer has legal authority to remove trespassers from your property.

Review Your Insurance Policy

Make sure your insurance policy includes coverage for property damage incurred during a protest. Meet with your insurance agent to verify this information. You may be able to take legal actin if video footage reveals the identity of the looters.
